The type of motor used for industrial sewing machine has evolved in the past few years. It's probably confusing for you to choose the right ones with so many terms. We are going to explain the difference between each motor for your information
In general, in recent years more manufacturers are switching to direct drive servo motor systems. With the change many misconception are born in which some would say its not durable and its not as fast as the old motor types. Lets jump to the different type of motors in the market now
A) CLUTCH MOTOR
Clutch motor is the old workhorse of the industrial sewing machines. Most of the older sewing machines will be using this type of motor. The motor is characterized :
- Its much heavier, can go up to 20 kg for the whole set. Add with the machine and table, the weight can do up to 50-70 kg easily.
- It uses belting, carbon brush and capacitors. 3 of the most sought after parts that will wear out in the long run
- The speed is fixed. It can be slowed down by changing the pulleys. Changing pulleys is not something you want to do everytime you want to change the speed. It's not a straight forward work
- The motor always run when the switch is on. You can hear the humming sound of the machine
- Motor is normally located under the table
- The needle positioning after sewing can not be set
- Bobbin winding is done using the belting
In general, most manufacturers are moving away from this motor type as it is more expensive and more parts to service later on
B) SERVO MOTOR
The servo motor has been in the market for a long time. However it's not as popular as the clutch motor and normally comes as an option to upgrade. The servo motor for industrial sewing machines are
- Size is smaller and weight is lighter. Normally its not more than 10 kg per whole set and comes with a control panel for easy speed contol adjustment
- Still uses belting.
- Speed can be changed easily using the control panel
- The motor only runs when you press the pedal
- Electricy consumption is less as much as 70% per the manufactuerer's claim, compared to the clutch motor
- Motor is still located under the table like the clutch motor
- For some servo motor, you can set the needle posititioning after sewing so that it does above the fabric after finishing
- Bobbin winding is still done using the belting
Because of the smaller size of the motor, most customers think that the speed is smaller. However this is not the case! It can still go as fast as the clutch motor.
C) DIRECT DRIVE SERVO MOTOR
Direct drive servo motor is also a servo motor but the location of the motor is right besides the lockstitch sewing machine. We are of the opinion that in the coming years this will be motor types in use. At the moment many manufacturers have switched to this type of motor for their machines. Some of the characteristics are as below
- Size is smaller and weight is lighter. Normally its not more than 10 kg per whole set and comes with a control panel for easy speed contol adjustment
- Directly situated besides the machine, hence the name of direct drive. No more belting
- Speed can be changed easily using the control panel
- The motor only runs when you press the pedal
- Electricy consumption is less as much as 70% per the manufactuerer's claim, compared to the clutch motor
- For some servo motor, you can set the needle posititioning after sewing so that it does above the fabric after finishing
- Bobbin winding is done on top of the machine similar to portable sewing machine
For some brands like Bruce, Gemsy, the machines come with build in direct drive system with the sewing machine. Most of the computerized lockstich industrial sewing mahcines are built with direct drive servo motor system. Computerized lockstitch industrial sewing machines offer additional ability to auto cut, auto lockstitch or auto needle position depending on the brand and model. Below are some example of the built in direct drive servo motor system for sewing machine
For summary, based on the current trend, direct drive servo motor will be the way forward for industrial sewing machine as it allows several adavantages for uses such as ability to control speed, much lighter machines and electricy bill savings!
